Overhead distribution line design is a complex and technical engineering specialty that is often underappreciated. It requires the same design considerations as transmission line design, but is generally complicated by more angles, more poles per mile, more underbuild requirements, and more guying restrictions. Poles are frequently placed at locations prescribed by secondary cable requirements and profile surveys are not generally available. The design requires special calculations and experienced judgments.
Underground distribution design requires awareness of calculations required to determine cable ampacity under various configurations and soil types.
Utilities may call distribution line designers “staking engineers” or “estimators”. TriAxis has specialists who can act as an adjunct to a utility’s own staff, and perform these functions and develop designs formatted to the utility’s requirements.
