PHOTOVOLTAIC (SOLAR) DESIGN SERVICES
Solar Energy (PV) Example
TriAxis engineers can provide electrical power design services to developers and contractors of utility-interconnected photovoltaic (PV) systems.

Support for smaller-scale localized generation projects (typically less than 100 MW) includes:

  • collection systems layout and circuit sizing
  • conceptual and final substation design
  • transmission line conceptual and final design
  • feeder voltage drop analysis
  • feeder harmonic assessment
  • transfer trip system scoping
  • protective relay requirements definitions
  • assistance with the development of communication path specification
  • power factor assessment
  • technical review of interconnection agreements for feasibility and implementation
Support for large projects (typical plant capacities in excess of 100 MW) includes:
  • developer and contractor assistance includes conceptual designs for EHV generation tie-lines used for preliminary design and approval stages
  • complete design solutions for the PV overhead and underground collection system
  • project substation design
  • EHV transmission line design
  • develop project scoping documents
  • develop project budget estimates
Recent photovoltaic projects include:

Large Scale Photovoltaic (project in development and subject to nondisclosure). TriAxis provided the developer with basic concepts for interconnection of a large-scale PV project (100 MW+) through existing substations, conceptual route alternatives for interconnection, conceptual transmission structure concepts, and order-of-magnitude cost estimates for several transmission line route options. The project included power substation conceptual designs that balanced initial costs with flexibility for maintenance and operation.

Large Scale Photovoltaic (project in development and subject to nondisclosure). TriAxis provided project development and permitting assistance (Conditional Use and Environmental Impact) for a large photovoltaic generation plant (200 MW+). We developed design concepts for a substation and overhead and underground transmission lines to interconnect the project to the existing grid. We also provided guidance for the design of the medium-voltage collection system and system protection equipment necessary for low, medium, and high fault current applications.

Large Scale Photovoltaic (project in development and subject to nondisclosure). TriAxis provided project development and permitting assistance (Conditional Use and Environmental Impact) for a large photovoltaic generation plant (200 MW+). We developed design concepts for a substation and switchyard and developed specific designs with structure locations for overhead transmission lines to interconnect the project to the existing grid. We aided in the civil design activities relating to design of the access roads and transmission structure pad sites. We developed a design specification for the bulk-power step-up substation transformers using FR3 dielectric fluid.

Medium Scale Photovoltaic (project in development and subject to nondisclosure). TriAxis provided project development and transmission line siting assistance for a (30 MW) photovoltaic generation plant. We developed design concepts for an overhead transmission line to interconnect the project to the existing grid.

Winery, Lane County, Oregon. TriAxis provided support for the interconnection of a 1MW photovoltaic project tied to a utility feeder. We reviewed voltage drop, protection coordination, and developed recommendations for utility system upgrades to properly accommodate the added generation.

Highway Overlook, Clackamas County, Oregon. TriAxis provided conceptual design for a 2MW photovoltaic project to be within state road right-of-way. Interconnection is planned for a utility 12kV feeder. The project included evaluation of protective systems and development of a transfer trip protection approach. Our work required coordination with the serving utility, development of the project one-line power and communication diagram, and estimation of electrical construction costs.

Columbia Gorge, Gilliam County, Oregon. TriAxis provided conceptual design for a 2MW photovoltaic project to interconnect with a small rural substation. We provided project one-line power and communication diagrams, basic project electrical power designs, and performed voltage drop and fault current analyses. We supported the developer during interconnection feasibility and facility studies, and provided expert assistance during the utility and developer discussions and negotiations.
